Paper, Vinyl or Clear? Choosing the Right Label Material

Where your label goes decides what it should be made of. A quick guide to label materials, adhesives and finishes.

Printed labels and stickers

A label that peels, smudges or fades makes a good product look cheap. Most label problems come down to choosing the wrong material or adhesive for where the label will live. Here’s how to get it right.

Paper labels

Paper is affordable and prints beautifully. It’s ideal for dry products, boxes, bags and short-term promotions. Uncoated and textured papers suit craft, food and natural brands.

Vinyl and synthetic labels

Vinyl and other synthetic films resist water, oil and handling. Choose them for bottles, cosmetics, anything kept in a fridge or bathroom, and products that will be handled often.

Clear labels

Clear labels give a “no label” look on glass and clear packaging, so the product shows through. Designs usually need a white ink layer behind colours to stay bright.

Pick the right adhesive

  • Permanent for most products and packaging.
  • Removable for price labels and temporary promotions.
  • Freezer grade for frozen and chilled food.
  • High-tack for curved, textured or difficult surfaces.

Finishes that protect and impress

Matte or gloss lamination protects against scuffs and moisture. Foil, spot UV and embossing add a premium touch for luxury products.

Rolls or sheets?

If you apply labels by hand, sheets are easy to work with. If you use a labelling machine, you’ll need rolls on the right core size and in the right direction.
